A woman who lives on Perryn Road has been the victim of an attack on her home by what appears to be a sling shot.

A 10mm ball bearing was fired through the kitchen window at the back of her home entering just by the sink.

She was sitting in an adjacent room when she heard a loud crash. When she entered her kitchen, she saw the hole in her window and small shards of glass on the windowsill and spread 20 feet into the kitchen.

She says, “I consider myself extremely fortunate that I was not standing at the sink at the time, or outside in my garden, in the line of fire, as the outcome could have been very different.”

She adds that the attack which took place on the afternoon of the 29 March has made her feel vulnerable and threatened but she has no idea who is responsible or what motivated them.

Her garden is quite long with the railway line at the end of it with the houses and gardens of St Dunstan’s Avenue on the other side.

She emailed a report to the police and five hours later received a call from an officer who told her that it was probably just children messing about with an air gun. The officer said she would ask the local neighbourhood police to come and have a look at it and that they would go and knock on some doors across the railway line.

However, the following Wednesday she received an email from the police saying that the case was being closed as ‘unfortunately we won't be able to identify suspects from the casing.’

She responded to this with dismay saying, “I no longer feel comfortable in my own home or garden, and am constantly on edge wondering if this could happen again and seriously injure me or a member of my family. I feel it would be a great help to me, and my neighbours, if the police made some attempt to identify what came through my window and also made some enquiries locally. This would at least act as a warning and hopefully a deterrent, if nothing else.”

However, a week later she received an email from the local Safer Neighbourhoods officer who said he had been on holiday but that, now that he had returned, he was going to visit some houses on St. Dunstan’s Avenue and speak to the occupants about the risks of using sling shots. The officer’s response was found to be very reassuring by the householder.

It is believed the incident involved a sling shot rather than a BB gun because of the size of the projectile found. This was 10mm in diameter whereas ball bearings used in a BB gun are normally no larger than 4.5mm.

Up until now the use of sling shots in urban areas is relatively rare with the police saying that most cases occur in rural areas and are often associated with cruelty to animals.
