A 23-year-old woman from Acton who was jailed for nine years for stabbing her mother to death has failed to get her sentence reduced.

Hanaa Bennis was convicted of manslaughter through diminished responsibility after killing 58-year-old Aziza Bennis at her flat in Boddington Gardens in August 2022.

She claimed that the Ark Acton school dinner lady was a violent and abusive alcoholic who had left her with a number of mental disorders including PTSD putting her through ‘hell on earth’.

Her barristers had asked the Court of Appeal for a reduction in her jail term due to these circumstances. They told the court that on the day of the killing Ms Bennis had gone round to her mother’s to ask for help with child care for her young daughter. She claims that a row then ensued in which her mother threatened her with a knife and a glass. Neighbours then heard the sound of an altercation with objects being thrown.

The police were called and, when they forced their way into the flat, they found Aziza Bennis lying bloodied on the floor in the foetal position and a knife on the coffee table. A post mortem revealed she had been stabbed 30 times. Her daughter had filmed the aftermath of the attack on hir mobile phone.

Hanaa Bennis was found to have a cut above her eye and a puncture wound to her thigh. She was arrested and taken to hospital where she became violent

The appeal judges concluded that full consideration was given to Ms Bennis’s mental state and her history as a victim of abuse when the original sentence was given out.
