The London branch of global social justice charity Who Is Hussain marked this year’s International Dentists’ Day by giving out free dental kits in Acton this Sunday (9 February).

The packs contained toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss and were handed out as part of an attempt to tackle dental hygiene issues in the homeless community.

The kits were provided by reps from Colgate, Oral-B and Henry Schein and were well received by the community.

They were given out at the regular Food Drives - which Who is Hussain London has carried out since 2015 - alongside a healthy hot meal, a hot drink and fruit.

Many studies indicate that homeless people have poor oral health and experience higher levels of cavities, tooth decay and periodontal disease than the general population.

A study by homelessness charity Groundswell found that 90 per cent of homeless individuals have had an issue with oral health since becoming homeless, with a third currently experiencing dental pain. 7 in 10 reported lost teeth since becoming homeless. 15% of homeless people have pulled out their own teeth.

Kumail Jaffer, Lead Rep at Who is Hussain London, said, "Feeding the homeless and needy in London is something we have performed consistently for years.

"But some of our guests may be unable to take advantage as they experiencing tooth pain or other oral conditions from a lack of dental care.

"Providing both short and long-term support is something we pride ourselves on at Who is Hussain London.

"This is in the spirit of Hussain Ibn Ali, whose charitable values inspire our actions today."

The organisation is inspired by the legacy of Hussain ibn Ali, a key figure in Islamic history, particularly within Shia Islam. It aims to promote humanitarian values such as social justice, charity, and community service, reflecting the principles upheld by Hussain ibn Ali.
