Charity has already held over 100 food drives in the centre of town
January 9, 2025 A charity that has been supporting the homeless and needy in Acton since 2022 has committed to continue to provide help through the coming year. Who Is Hussain London started its Sunday afternoon food drives in Market Place, in front of Morrisons in October 2022 after identifying a need in the area. These have since taken place 114 times and up to 90 guests are served every week with a hot meal, a hot drink, fruit and snacks. The charity had been running one Food Drive a week in central London on Saturdays since 2015 and Acton was its second location. After discussions with Ealing Council, Who is Hussain London were given the permission to operate outside the Morrison's in King Street every Sunday from 3-5pm. With nearby homeless charities only operating Monday-Friday, many of the people helped now don’t have to walk to other boroughs to be fed during the weekend. Who is Hussain London estimate it has served almost 10,000 meals in Acton since late 2022 - and have never missed a Sunday to serve. Volunteers start preparing for this early in the week by ensuring there is hot food prepared, ready for collection on Sunday, as well as a supply of fruit, crisps and other snacks. There is also a hot drink station where volunteers prepare tea, coffee, hot chocolate and soup for guests at the Food Drive. Up to 90 people benefit from the weekly event outside Morrisons Guests have also benefitted from haircuts (through a partnership with a local barber), clothes donations and sanitary kit giveaways. Kumail Jaffer, the Lead Rep of Who is Hussain London, said, "We are delighted to keep serving the homeless and needy people of Acton. "We have held more than 100 Food Drives since late 2022, serving thousands of meals to those who need it. This is in the spirit of Hussain Ibn Ali, whose charitable values inspire our actions today. "In 2025, we will continue to improve and expand our operation to ensure anyone who needs a helping hand in Acton gets it. We also thank the people of Acton for their generosity in supporting our work." The organisation is inspired by the legacy of Hussain ibn Ali, a key figure in Islamic history, particularly within Shia Islam. It aims to promote humanitarian values such as social justice, charity, and community service, reflecting the principles upheld by Hussain ibn Ali. For more information visit its website.
