Regular users of Acton Park may have noticed recently that it looks a lot tidier.

This is because recently children from Derwentwater Primary School took part in a litter pick which removed 31 bags containing 26kilos of rubbish.

It was the inaugural Kids for the Climate event organised with the help of the Derwentwater School Association (DSA). The pupils joined forces with LAGERCan and Ealing's local Poet's Corner Acton group on Sunday 23 March with over 70 adults and children taking part.

The exercise didn’t end on the day as sources of litter will be analysed to develop solutions on how to reduce it in future.

Kids for the Climate is the new eco-club set up by Derwentwater Primary School pupils, led by Year 6 teacher Ms Badau, with support from the Sustainability Managers for Schools programme, to take pupil-led action on climate change.

Kids for the Climate have already taken part in a 'Cut Your Carbon' challenge, a school community Sustainability Audit and a Dragons' Den style pitch to school leadership. The idea for the litter pick came from one of the pitches and the winning team saw their idea come to life across the park.

The children are particularly concerned about plastic pollution and the evidence from the litter pick will allow them to collect hard data on what constitutes litter in the park. The next step will see the eco-club brainstorm ideas on how to help prevent litter in future, based on the evidence they find.

LAGERCan provided all the equipment and training for the event, organised by the DSA and Ms Badau. Derwentwater staff, recently recognised by Ealing 'school staff hero', also came along to support.

Tricia Howey, DSA Secretary said, "Derwentwater children are always eager to engage with the community. They are full of ideas and motivation and love to see their families involved. The DSA is on hand to support that and ensure our school continues to thrive. We are very proud of the children and how they showed up to support our community."

Kids for the Climate is just one initiative amongst others at Derwentwater Primary School including the Global Garden outdoor learning initiative, tree planting, and uniform recycling art project, designed by the school and DSA to help children enjoy a healthy, active and sustainable lifestyles while giving back to their local community.

The event was also part of the Keep Britain Tidy bigger campaign Great British Spring Clean and LAGERCan set a specific target of cleaning every single one of Ealing's 146 parks and open spaces.
