Residents want cameras to stop accidents near Pope's Lane

Local residents living in the Gunnersbury Avenue area have demanded action on speeding drivers following a number of accidents along the A406 near their homes. They say drivers of huge articulated lorries and joy-riding motorcyclists are a risk to pedestrians and other motorists.

The residents are campaigning to have TfL install speed cameras at a speeding 'hot spot' at the junction of Pope's Lane and Gunnersbury Avenue. Locals collected signatures last year following a number of accidents which increased concern about the issue. The A406 is one of the busiest roads in London, taking heavy traffic northwards towards the M1.

A spokesperson said : "We have received two responses from TfL, neither of which addresses the issue of the speed of the traffic as it leaves the junction of Popes Lane and Gunnersbury Avenue. They have now reinstated a camera close to the footbridge and near the bend in the road by Princes Avenue. This is not enough.

"If TfL is serious about reducing the risks of further deaths, it must install another camera higher up the southbound carriageway, and we will continue to lobby them to take this sensible course of action to stop drivers of huge articulated lorries and joy-riding motorcyclists in particular to stop driving irresponsibly and risking others’ lives.

The spokesperson said they were making a "reasonable request" to have the current speed limit enforced in their area, just as it is on the rest of Gunnersbury Avenue.MP Mary Macleod has also supported the residents in their campaign. We have asked TfL for comment.
