Single Councillor in Ealing Common Conservative's only representative in area
All wards centred in the W3 area returned Councillors from the same party as the last election after the vote this Thursday 3 May.
Labour won all nine seats in the Acton wards with increased majorities. In Southfield ward the Liberal Democrats also built on their win in 2014. There was however disappointment for the Liberal Democrats as they failed to increase their number of seats overall even in Ealing Common ward where they were hoping to add to the one councillor they had there. In a tight contest in which nine candidates were within a few hundred votes of each other, the three main parties eash won a seat. Joanna Dabrowska held for the Conservatives to make the ward a three way split.
With the voting in all 23 wards now declared, Labour have 57 councillors, Conservatives 8 and the Liberal Democrats 4. Labour had been hoping for bigger gains and the net gain of four seats was at the lower end of some of their members' expectations.
In Southfield ward Gary Busuttil, Andrew Steed and Gary Malcolm had been widely expected to retain their seats for the Liberal Democrats. Turnout for the ward was high with 46.6% of the electorate voting. The Conservatives were second even though they increased their number of votes compared to 2014.
Re-elected Councillor Andrew Steed said, “We are grateful to Southfield residents for re-electing us. We had one of the higher turnouts in Ealing, which was helped by the activity of our Conservative opponents-so fair game to Vanessa, Julian and Andrew.”
