A bilingual performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette is to be held in St Martin’s Church in West Acton this Tuesday (3 August) as part of the Ealing Summer Festival.

The play has been reimagined under the direction of former RSC associate director Aileen Gonsalves and the Butterfly Theatre Company to be set in a modern day era in which countries have closed their borders.

No freedom of travel has seen generations grow up in a world where they only every experience their own culture. London is the last possible hub for head of government meetings but is about to close its boundaries as well. England and France, former allies, are on the brink of a war due to a dispute over the Channel Islands. The two heads, Prime Minister Capulet of England and Ambassador Montague of France are fighting in court for who is to keep them. At this summit, Romeo, the son of the English Prime Minister meets the daughter of the French Ambassador, Juliette.

The director has a particular way of working, called the Gonsalves Method, and has just released her acting book "Shakespeare and Meisner" with Bloomsbury for the New Arden Shakespeare Performance Series. She was Head of the MA in Acting at Artsed Drama School in Chiswick for four years.

Produced by Emerge Productions, the play is being performed twice at St. Martin’s, in the afternoon and evening, before transferring to the Albany Theatre in Coventry.

Tickets cost £11.37 including booking fee and can be purchased by clicking here.
