On Saturday 1 October Acton Saturday Market W3 launched their Reduce and Recycle Hub during The Great Big Green Week.

The focus of the first event was waste reduction and circular economy. Acton Market has gained lottery funding to support the project and so looking to build it into a useful hub of help, support and education for the local community.

It provided an opportunity to recycle by bringing along old or unloved items such as clothing and shoes, small electrical items and laptops. Repair of bikes and clothing was also on offer.

Environmental charity Traid collected many of the items brought along. It is committed to protecting the environment and reducing world poverty by recycling, fundraising and campaigning in the UK. It also offers a doorstep collection in partnership with Ealing council for clothes and small electrical items. For more information on how to book a doorstep collection click here.

The Fixing Factor were also on hand to collect old laptops to be wiped clean, upgraded and presented to a new owner.

Ealing Repair Dafe were there to teach you how to patch and darn your clothes. Extending the life of your clothes helps the planet as well as saving you money. . The Ealing Repair café is run by volunteers and meets up monthly in Ealing Broadway. https://ealingrepaircafe.org/

In partnership with Ealing Council, Dr Bike mechanics carried out minor repairs on the spot and gave advice on how to look after your bike to keep you riding all year round. They hold regular sessions across Ealing borough.

Sustrans was also there getting feedback from Acton residents for a walking and cycling hub which will be based near the Friary Park Estate..

Many of the regular stall holders also sell returns and seconds from the high street at a reduced price. So come along and grab a bargain, knowing you will be helping reducing waste as well as saving money.

The Reduce and Recycle Hub project at Acton Market is part of the lottery funded project, part of the Climate Action Fund. It aims to become a regular feature of the market on the first Saturday of the month, with 5 November and 3 December being the events for 2022. If your organisation, community group or as a trader are interested in getting a stall or can volunteer to help run some of the activities, email mary.horesh@actionwestlondon.org.uk.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

We are therefore asking our readers to consider offering financial support to these efforts. Any money given will help support community and public interest news and the expansion of our coverage in this area.

A suggested monthly payment is £8 but we would be grateful for any amount for instance if you think this site offers the equivalent value of a subscription to a daily printed newspaper you may wish to consider £20 per month. If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

If you do support us in this way we'd be interested to hear what kind of articles you would like to see more of on the site – send your suggestions to the editor.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site. For £30 plus VAT per month you will be the designated sponsor of at least one article a month with your logo appearing if supplied. If there is a specific community group or initiative you'd like to support we can make sure your sponsorship is featured on related content for a one off payment of £50 plus VAT.
