Jabed Hussain changed his name in 'poor' attempt to fool authorities

A man from Acton who attempted to travel to Syria with the intention of joining ISIS has been convicted.

22-year-old Jabed Hussain, who resided in Acton, and attended the An Noor Cultural and Community Centre on Church Road pleaded guilty today (10 November) to two charges under the Terrorism Act.

In August 2015, Hussain attempted to travel to Syria and was detained by Turkish authorities at the Turkey - Syria border and returned to the UK.

He then changed his name by deed poll to "Ishaq Jabir Hussain" and attempted to apply for a passport in this new name in order to evade the authorities.

He was caught in an undercover operation when he chatted online to a person he believed could help him get to Syria but in fact was an undercover officer for the Met. He was arrested for TACT offences on Thursday, 28 April.

Commander Dean Haydon of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) said, "Hussain made a concerted effort to get to Syria and intended to join ISIS. Changing his name was a poor attempt to evade the authorities which was always destined to fail."

Sentencing has been set for 16 December at the Old Bailey.
