Acton Man Killed in Suspected Arson

A man from Acton has died after a suspected arson in an outbuilding.

Police were called at approximately 1am on Monday, 25 April, to reports of a fire at the building at the back of a house in Cranleigh Gardens, Southall.

A 21-year-old man was rescued from the fire by the London Fire Brigade. He was taken to a specialist burns hospital in Essex by the London Ambulance Service, where later died.

Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, we are satisfied that the deceased is Sherif Adel Makar Habib a duel British and Egyptian national from Acton.

Mr Habib's next of kin have been informed and his family are being supported by a specially trained Family Liaison Officer (FLO) from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has been bailed to a date in mid-June pending further enquiries.

Three more men aged between 30 and 40 were arrested today on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson. They remain in police custody at this time.

A post mortem examination took place at Uxbridge Mortuary on Wednesday, 27 April, and gave the initial cause of death as severe burns.

At this stage in the investigation Mr Habib's death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances.

Detective Inspector Janet Livesey, Ealing Police CID, said: "I would like to appeal to anyone with any information, or indeed anyone who witnessed the fire to come forward and speak to the police in confidence."
